Boosting Polishing Quality by 50% at Amphenol Phoenix
Nordbo Robotics, Jimmy Alison Jorgensen

Amphenol Phoenix, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of interconnect products, needed to optimize the rough and fine polishing of stainless-steel parts used in high-end consumer electronics — including components for the Microsoft Surface Duo hinge.

Their challenges were clear:

  • Increasing production demand and strict quality requirements

  • Manual polishing that could not achieve the required sharp, consistent finish

  • High material waste and low throughput

  • Specialized machinery that was costly and limited to single-product use

  • Difficulty finding automation that could match the finish of a skilled human polisher

The Solution

Nordbo Robotics addressed these challenges by implementing its advanced polishing software and adding a new “Point-to-Point (P2P) Teach Method.”

This allowed Amphenol’s engineers to create robot paths directly from the teach pendant and generate new polishing programs within minutes — ensuring flexibility and fast setup across different products.

The solution was deployed using:

  • 12× Nachi MZ07L robots

  • 12× Nordbo Controllers

  • 12× NRS-6 Force/Torque sensors

  • 12× fully automated polishing cells with infeed/outfeed systems

With Nordbo’s precise force control and robot path generation, Amphenol achieved consistent polishing quality across all systems.

The Results

The implementation led to measurable performance improvements:

  • +300% increase in productivity and throughput compared to manual processing

  • +50% improvement in quality ratio

  • ROI within 1.5 years

  • Significant reduction in material waste

  • Improved ergonomics and workplace safety

“Nordbo Robotics brought us great advantages in competitiveness and technology, giving Amphenol Phoenix the opportunity to win additional projects for companies such as Apple and Microsoft.”
